Southport Marine Lake Triathlon - Race Report - Sunday 17th June 2012
Vital Events brought triathlon back to Southport on Sunday 17th June and were greeted by very windy conditions on the coast but this did not deter the competitors who turned in some amazing performances on this scenic course to fight it out for an extensive prize list thanks to our generous sponsors Endurance-Junkie.com, Vermarcuk.co.uk, RedVenom.co.uk and Racepace.co.uk
The Standard Distance Race saw some quick swimming with James Radcliffe (Team Triful) in his debut triathlon season first out of the water in 16m55s. The lead changed hands on the bike with Doug Roberts (RedVenom.co.uk) taking a narrow advantage into the run from Michael Wilson (A1Multisport.co.uk). Doug then pulled away with the quickest run of the day to come home almost 4mins clear of the fast finishing Ian Lawton who ran past Chris Joyce (Huub Tfn Rt) in the closing stages to take 2nd with Chris just 7 seconds behind in 3rd.
The Female Race was led out of the water by Rachel Armstrong (City of Chester Triathlon) with Helen Shulver (Team Trisports) taking a narrow lead into the run but Rebecca Brand (Newcastle Triathlon Club) came through with a dominant run to take the win by over 5 minutes from Helen with Yvonne Russell completing the podium.
In the Sprint Race Doug’s younger brother Fergus Roberts (RedVenom.co.uk) came out of the water in the lead from Alex Foster (Astley & Tyldesley Road Runners) but Alex fought back on the bike and held a narrow lead at the start of the run from his younger counterpart. However, 17 year old Fergus finished with the fastest run of the Sprint Race to take the win by just over 30 seconds from Alex with the fast finishing Ian Roberts (Torq) in 3rd.
Angela Jamieson had a narrow lead after the swim in the Female Sprint Race with only 6 seconds between the top 3 ladies. The close proximity of the other competitors did not last long as it quickly turned into an exhibition of powerful cycling and running by the experienced Vicki Wade (Manchester Triathlon Club) who completed the quickest bike and run splits to take a comfortable win by over 4 mins from Angela Jamieson and Kate Ritchie (Manchester Triathlon Club) respectively.
